Gaming with Cameron

My son Cameron (just turned 6 years old) has really been getting into his gaming recently. First, we went to Partizan the other week and he spent 2 hours playing my club's 'Dead's Army' game. Then, after an hours drive home, he insisted we played something else. So I got out the Caesarian Romans and played a simplified War & Conquest game with him. He lost, but still really enjoyed it! Almost 4 hrs gaming in one day! I would never have believed that a 6yr old could concentrate on anything for so long! Just shows what happens when they are interested and fully absorbed, I guess...
On the phone to Nannie explaining what's going on...

Its about to go pear shaped on each flank for both of us...cavalry outflanking the legions...

After this crucial combat, Cameron's uppermost legion broke and fled, causing his cavalry to turn and run, thereby preventing his flank attack. On the other flank, I did manage to get my Gallic horse onto his elite legionaries' flank. Game to Dad!!!

Then, this morning, when Mrs Geetarhero popped out to a holistic therapy show thingy, Cameron and I set to on an Arthurian skirmish. The rules were cobbled from all sorts, with points values and basic combat from Saga, activation from Dux Britanniarum and morale form Lord of the Rings. This all made it very brutal and very bloody! The aim was to gain the jewels and destroy the opposing war band. Cameron took the upstanding Romano-British and I took the scurvy Saxons!

Cameron played this really well and had some uncommonly superb dice rolls, destroying almost all of my war band AND gaining 5 jewels to my 4! Victory for the forces of order!!! :-)

Enjoy the pics courtesy of the I-Pad, which I am at last getting to grips with!!

The Saxon Warlord loots the pottery workshop...

Saxons gain a jewel...

Get stuck in, lads...

Clash or Warlords...this saw the Saxon warlord die under a hail of furious blows from his British counterpart...

Cameron threw 5 D6 needing 5+...I threw 10 needing 4+...results above...sigh... :-)

Sounds like your son has been bitten by the bug! Yes, he's put in some gaming hours like a veteran. Great looking troops and game, BTW.

Superb stuff Andy! That's an impressive amount of concentrated gaming for a little fellow. Good pics of the games too.

Some great games there. My son is just getting into it at eight and I am a lucky man. Enjoy the experience half as much as your son and you will be in heaven :-)

Andy,

Dave Toone of the W&C blog fame and I are great fans of W&C, and have been running W&C events at Gravesend for the past 3 years.

We've decided to spread our wings and are holding our next W&C event at Foundry near Nottingham on 22nd -23rd November. It is 4 games over 2 days using 2500 point Dark Ages armies.

Due to limited space, entry is by invite only and Matt OS, the author of the Wargames Table blog suggested that we ask you as you are clearly a W&C enthusiast.

If you fancy attending, or would like further information, I can be contacted at philturner@talktalk.net

Regards,

Phil

Great stuff. I've been playing a lot of Gruntz and X-Wing with my boy. They care less about the rules and more about the fun.

Looks like a great game! Always good to see the wee ones getting into it :-) I can't wait for my son to be able to play!

Great to see. My son is 6 too but we tend to play WarhammerQuest and HeroScape (simplified) for an hour or two. Four hours is a fantastic result and I see you have been victim of the children and lucky dice syndrome.

I mostly play minis and I am spurred by your post to give them a shot with him.

Great table and miniatures too!

Great post! Inspires me to try Hordes of the Things or Warhammer with my children.

I have twin boys, also age 6, and I can't believe you held his attention for two 2 hour sessions! -- But, maybe I underestimate them ... perhaps we will give it a try!
